American Cockroaches
The American cockroach is the largest in size among the house-infesting cockroaches in Toronto, Ontario.
The Habitat and Diet of American Cockroach
American cockroaches are found in food processing areas and food storage areas, as well as other types of buildings. American cockroaches are also found in sewers and basements, particularly around pipes and drains.
They are active when the temperature is 70 degrees or higher, but they can survive lower temperatures with the right conditions.
A Cockroach’s Oothecae (aka Egg Case or egg Capsule) are also a tell tale sign of their presence. Each egg case contains 14 eggs. These egg capsules are then deposited on a surface in an area with good environmental and safety elements.
Cockroaches would use secretions from their mouth to secure the egg case to the surface. German Cockroach’s eggs would hatch in about 24 – 38 days depending upon the ambient temperature.
The Threats posed by American Cockroach
American roaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. They can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage and then carry these into food or onto food surfaces.
Germs that cockroaches eat from decaying matter or sewage are protected while in their bodies and may remain infective for several weeks longer than if they had been exposed to cleaning agents, rinse water, or just sunlight and air. Recent medical studies have shown that cockroach allergens cause lots of allergic reactions in inner city children. American roaches were even shown to cause asthma in children. These allergens build up in deposits of droppings, secretions, cast skins, and dead bodies of roaches.
Social Behavior
Since American Cockroaches are instinctively nocturnal, a daytime inspection of low scale may not result in affirmative assessment for lack of cockroach activity.
American Cockroaches in general produce odorous secretions from various points in their bodies. Such secretions can affect the flavors of various foods. When American cockroach populations are high, these secretions may result in a characteristic odor in the general region of the infestation.
Disease-producing organisms such as bacteria, protozoa, and viruses have been found in their bodies.

Interesting Information
Cockroaches have existed on our planet for over 300 million years as shown by the fossil evidence. Hence, they have earned the respect to be among the most capable of surviving groups of animals. Generally, Cockroaches are very good at adapting to the environment and have thus become an uninvited guest in many of our structures – from air planes to warehouses and homes to hospitals. There are more than 3500 species of Cockroaches on our planet but 4 among them are most troublesome pest in Ontario.
American Cockroach Pest Control and Extermination:
We prefer to utilize a commercially registered insecticide Bait application to deliver a successful American Cockroach Pest Control and extermination.
Here are the key points:
- Because broadcast application of Control Agents is avoided in Bait application, it results in less pollution and general hazard for people and pets. Hence, there is a lot less intrusion to the flow of life.
- American Cockroach would be attracted to the bait and having consumed it, they would be impacted by it. The American Cockroach are least likely to be going into new areas to widen the area of the infestation.
- Not only that the American Cockroach would be exterminated having consumed the bait but they would also prove to be a source of secondary poisoning for other American Cockroach.
- This technique is cleaner in it’s application and safer for people and pets.
- Client is not required to prepare the property in any way for the application process.
- Client is not required to leave the property during nor after the application.
The Expected Results of American Cockroach Extermination and Outcome of the Treatment:
In about 3-5 weeks, all American Cockroach would have had the time and opportunity to feed on the bait. The bulk of Bait’s content is palatable food for American Cockroach but it also contains a small but lethal amount of active agent. It is this substance that eliminates American Cockroach.
Gradually all American Cockroach would become affected in all of their nesting areas. In about 3-5 weeks all American Cockroach would have expired. Most of the American Cockroach would have died behind the scene in their hidden nesting spaces. In cases of very high infestations, there may be dead American Cockroach found near the foraging areas.
When it comes to cleaning away the debris and remnants of American Cockroach, standard care should be taken. Try to avoid inhaling the dust and debris. Spray anti-bacterial cleaning agent to suppress the particles from becoming air borne. Then wipe them off with a disposable cleaning cloth. Use of cleaning gloves is recommended.
Our exterminators will inspect the structure for points of vulnerabilities that may facilitate future infestations or conditions that may be helping American Cockroach to flourish. It will be up to the owner to act on the recommendations.
At Quest Pest Management Inc., we have the highest success rate of complete American Cockroach Pest Control and extermination – only with the initial treatment.
Prior to carrying out treatment for American Cockroach, we will do an inspection or survey of the property to determine the extent and scope of the infestation. In doing so, we will also obtain information from people present on site.
