They are mistakenly also called the "stink bug".
They may pierce plant tissues while feeding. They are not known to cause significant damage and are not considered to be agricultural pests.
They may form large aggregations while sunning themselves in areas near their host plant (e.g. on rocks, shrubs, trees, and man-made structures). However, their congregation habits and excreta can annoy people; thus, they are considered nuisance pests.

Box Elder Bugs
This is especially a problem during the cooler months, when they sometimes invade houses and other man-made structures seeking warmth or a place to overwinter. They remain inactive inside the walls (and behind siding) while the weather is cool.
When the heating systems revive them, some may falsely perceive it to be springtime and enter inhabited parts of the building in search of food, water, and conspecifics. In the spring, the bugs leave their winter hibernation locations to feed and lay eggs on maple or ash trees; aggregations may be seen during this time and well into summer and early fall, depending on the temperature.
We utilize the most effective insecticide Spray and Fog agents available from the leading pesticides manufactures. These pesticide are highly effective and contain most powerful active ingredients.
We employ the Spray and Fog technique to Control, and Exterminate the Box Elder Bug infestations. Some of the Characteristics of the Spray and Fog technique are:
Our exterminators will inspect the structure for points of vulnerabilities that may facilitate future infestations or conditions that may be helping the Pest to flourish. It will be up to the property owner to act on the recommendations.
Spray may be Water-Based or of the Emulsion type. Even though it would not stain or damage surfaces, it may be noticeable as a thin film of light color. The film may also have oily characteristics. If it is found on any surfaces that are used by people or pets, then it should be cleaned away at the earliest. For further information, please, see our Pesticides and the MSDS page.
In about 3-5 weeks, all pests would have been eliminated having directly or indirectly been exposed to the insecticide sprayed. Typically, the Pests would simply cease to exist. However, it is possible that some Pests may expire near human living spaces.
At QPM, we have the highest success rate of complete elimination of Box Elder Bugs with one treatment alone. The treatment includes a thorough inspection of the property before a comprehensive application process.
Prior to carrying out treatment against Box Elder Bugs, we will do an inspection or survey of the property to determine the extent and scope of the infestation.
QPM will obtain as much information as possible from people on site and use this information when conducting the survey.
What is the ongoing risk if I do not eradicate this infestation of Box Elder Bugs ?
The boxelders will overwinter in the walls of the home until the warmth brings them out. And that warmth can be the heated air from inside your home, bringing them out of the walls into the rooms of your home during the winter months. Like bugs such as stink bugs and squash bugs, boxelders can detect temperature differences of as little as one degree, so it doesn't take much for them to decide it's time to move further into a warmed environment.
