It’s Best!

German Cockroach is the most common among the house-infesting cockroaches in Toronto, Ontario. German cockroach can be found in homes, apartments, hotels, motels, restaurants and other structures of residence and business.
The adults are about 1/2 to 5/8 inches long and have two dark stripes. Both sexes have wings but do not fly. Males can be distinguished from females by a tapering shape of the abdomen.

German cockroach babies, called nymphs, look like adults except they are smaller, have no wings and are darker in color, sometimes even black. One stripe running down the middle of the back is a prominent marking of the younger German cockroach nymph.

The female German cockroach carries the egg capsule protruding from her rear until the eggs are ready to hatch. The German cockroach is the only house-infesting species that carries the eggs capsule this long. This is what makes it the most persistent cockroach in the United States because they are less likely to be taken by predators.

The adult females can produce 4 to 8 egg capsules in their lifetime. Each capsule contains 30 to 48 eggs. It usually takes 20 to 30 days from the time of initial formation of the first egg capsule until it hatches. There are 6 to 7 nymph stages, called instars, until they molt into the adult stage. The nymphs have habits as adults. They are mostly active at night and hide in cracks and crevices during the day. Seeing German cockroaches during the day is usually an indication of over population. All cracks and crevices are full or food is in short supply and they are stressed.

The Habitat and Diet of German Cockroach
German Cockroaches are found in food processing areas and food storage areas, as well as other types of buildings. German Cockroaches are also found in sewers and basements, particularly around pipes and drains.
German cockroaches usually hide in areas where there is ample food and moisture such as kitchens and other food areas but they can be found in other areas if they are stressed and as a result of a repellent insecticide somewhere else in the building or home. German cockroaches are attracted to fermented foods and beverage residues. If water is present, adults can live about a month without food, but young nymphs will die of starvation within 10 days. Without food or water the adults will die in about 2 weeks.
A Cockroach’s Oothecae (aka Egg Case or egg Capsule) are also a tell tale sign of their presence. Each egg case contains 30-48 eggs. These egg capsules are then deposited on a surface in an area with good environmental and safety elements. Cockroaches would use secretions from their mouth to secure the egg case to the surface. German Cockroach’s eggs would hatch in about 20 – 30 days depending upon the ambient temperature.
Cockroaches can survive on very little carbohydrate food. But they must be able to maintain their body moisture. That’s why they live in tight spaces where the air hardly moves.

Since German Cockroaches are instinctively nocturnal, a daytime inspection of low scale may not result in affirmative assessment for lack of cockroach activity. German Cockroaches in general produce odorous secretions from various points in their bodies. Such secretions can affect the flavors of various foods. When German cockroach populations are high, these secretions may result in a characteristic odor in the general region of the infestation. Disease-producing organisms such as bacteria, protozoa, and viruses have been found in their bodies.

The Threats posed by German Cockroach
Cockroaches are capable of carrying many dozens of bacteria, parasitic worms, and many other kinds of human pathogens. They can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage and then carry these into food or onto food surfaces. Germs that cockroaches eat from decaying matter or sewage are protected while in their bodies and may remain infective for several weeks longer than if they had been exposed to cleaning agents, rinse water, or just sunlight and air. Recent medical studies have shown that cockroach allergens cause lots of allergic reactions in inner city children. Severe cockroach infestation has been shown to cause asthma in children. These allergens build up in deposits of droppings, secretions, cast skins, and dead bodies of roaches.

Interesting Information

Cockroaches have existed on our planet for over 300 million years as shown by the fossil evidence. Hence, they have earned the respect to be among the most capable of surviving groups of animals. Generally, Cockroaches are very good at adapting to the environment and have thus become an uninvited guest in many of our structures – from air planes to warehouses and homes to hospitals. There are more than 3500 species of Cockroaches on our planet but 4 among them are most troublesome pest in Ontario.

Our Extermination Technique for German Cockroach and its Advantages.

We prefer to utilize a commercially registered insecticide Bait application to exterminate all major species of German Cockroach.

Here are the key points:

  • Because broadcast application of Control Agents is avoided in Bait application, it results in less pollution and general hazard for people and pets. Hence, there is a lot less intrusion to the flow of life.
  • German Cockroach would be attracted to the bait and having consumed it, they would be impacted by it. The German Cockroach are least likely to be going into new areas to widen the area of the infestation.
  • Not only that the German Cockroach would be exterminated having consumed the bait but they would also prove to be a source of secondary poisoning for other German Cockroach.
  • This technique is cleaner in it’s application and safer for people and pets.
  • Client is not required to prepare the property in any way for the application process.
  • Client is not required to leave the property during nor after the application.

The Expected Results of German Cockroach Extermination and Outcome of the Treatment:

In about 3-5 weeks, all German Cockroach would have had the time and opportunity to feed on the bait. The bulk of Bait’s content is palatable food for German Cockroach but it also contains a small but lethal amount of active agent. It is this substance that eliminates German Cockroach.

Gradually all German Cockroach would become affected in all of their nesting areas. In about 3-5 weeks all German Cockroach would have expired. Most of the German Cockroach would have died behind the scene in their hidden nesting spaces. In cases of very high infestations, there may be dead German Cockroach found near the foraging areas.

When it comes to cleaning away the debris and remnants of German Cockroach, standard care should be taken. Try to avoid inhaling the dust and debris. Spray anti-bacterial cleaning agent to suppress the particles from becoming air borne. Then wipe them off with a disposable cleaning cloth. Use of cleaning gloves is recommended.

Our exterminators will inspect the structure for points of vulnerabilities that may facilitate future infestations or conditions that may be helping German Cockroach to flourish. It will be up to the owner to act on the recommendations.

At Quest Pest Management Inc., we have the highest success rate of complete elimination of German Cockroach with one treatment alone.

Prior to carrying out treatment for German Cockroach, we will do an inspection or survey of the property to determine the extent and scope of the infestation. In doing so, we will also obtain information from people present on site.

Frequently asked Questions:

What can I do ? What are DIY suggestions ? How to prevent or remedy German Cockroaches ?

Some of the Do it Yourself recommendations are:

Prevent them:

Reduce the possibilities of German Cockroaches reaching you. They are likely to originate from places of high infestation levels. An infested object would have the tell tale signs such as: The Cockroach excrements, Egg Cases, Baby Cockroaches, Their skins and the Cockroaches themselves.

Unwelcome them:

  • In the order of priority second element that you should pay attention to is the Environment. An environment with good temperature, access to water and food, would be most hospitable to Cockroaches. They would reproduce and multiply at full potential, resulting in high infestation in short time. Without impacting yourself, consider reducing the temperature and humidity levels.
  • Check for condensation and water leaks and fix them around kitchen and washrooms.
  • Dispose of your garbage and recycling daily in tight lid containers so that Cockroaches never have access to it.
  • Periodically, clean under and around your toaster, stove, coffee maker, etc.
  • Scan your kitchen for moisture and food sources, before retiring for the night – this is when German Cockroaches are most active.
  • Reduce clutter of shopping bags, paper products and cardboards, etc.

Throw hurdles at them:

Next, limit the scouting and foraging activity zone of Cockroaches. Seal around pipes and conduits with expandable liquid foam or silicone gel. Also, you should caulk around the gaps in the cabinetry where Cockroaches take shelter behind.

Exterminate them:

Once you have reached the decision to deploy pesticides yourself, research what products are available to you in your jurisdiction. You may be able to get products registered for home use in your local hardware store.
Follow the instruction on the labels and data sheets. In an effort to reduce chemical exposure, we recommend baits versus spays.

Other companies are offering to spray and even that multiple applications. Why do you suggest to apply bait to Exterminate German Cockroaches?

Not only it is a environmentally friendly initiative and Green approach by QPM, it simply works best in most situations. If you have a case of an extremely high cockroach infestation, where there are thousands of cockroaches and you see dozens of them during day light hours in any given cabinet of your kitchen, then Spraying first and doing a follow-up with bait may make sense.

What are the disadvantages of the Spray application for German cockroach extermination?

Cockroaches would take shelter at the first signs of an insecticide spray being applied. And cockroaches have developed resistance to the residual affects of most commercial insecticides. Spraying on a cockroach and spraying on a surface that may be traveled upon by a cockroach are two very different applications.

What are the advantages of the Bait application for German cockroach extermination?

Firstly, it works. Cockroaches are attracted to it’s palatability. While cockroaches have develop resistance and avoidance techniques for surfaces treated by commercial insecticide spray, they are attracted to the gourmet components of the bait such as carbohydrates and water content. Because cockroaches ingest this bait and the minute amount of insecticide with it. This insecticide works from inside of the target organism. Hence, bait work flawlessly.

What is the difference between bait application by different providers. Why your bait application is superior to others for cockroach extermination?

Firstly, not all baits are created equal. It is the bulk of the contents of a bait that would attract the cockroach. Hidden in the primary matrix of the bait is the lethal pesticide. In some cases, the cockroaches have developed avoidance for the compositions that are detrimental to them. So the Baits that have been used for many years, are now avoided by cockroaches. We select from the most effective baits available for commercial applications. These products are only available to Licensed Pesticide Operators and are only deployed by Licensed Exterminators in Ontario.

Is one treatment often enough to get rid of problem ?

From our experience, more than 90% cases of German Cockroaches would be resolved by one bait application. If needed, we would provide with one follow-up treatment within the 7-months period, free of cost to our clients.

What our clients say:

“Your service was great. We have not had any indications of any pests since.”

Murray, via Email

“Our area (North Richmond Hill) has been plagued with fire ants for the last few years – these ants are aggressive and their stings extremely painful. Many of our neighbours could barely enjoy their own back yards because infestations were so bad. After researching, QPM was the only local company who specialized in Fire Ants and offered a 7 month guarantee. We hired them and the ants disappeared immediately. We’ve now gone on 4 months and we are still any free while other neighbours have had no such luck despite other companies and a variety of attempted home remedies. I urge you to call them if you have an ant problem, especially these dangerous Fire Ants.”

Carlo, via HomeStars

“Excellent service. Excellent warranty. Extremely trustworthy and service is what you always want but rarely expect. My service provider’s name is Raja. Great guy. Personable and gracious. I will always ask for him by name if I need more service. But what about the effectiveness of the service? Well, let’s just say my fianceé is deathly afraid of centipedes and since we got the service the only centipedes we ran in to were dead. I cannot say the same for Orkin.  After Orkin’s service, two huge centipedes decided to have a party in my bathroom on my blinds. Like a horror movie.  Get these guys if you hate crawly things.”

Rick, via HomeStars

“Highly efficient and got rid of the pests the first time! The consultation was thorough, the man explained exactly what would happen and how we had to prep for it. Would go with them again in a heartbeat!”

Lin, Google+

“A few months ago we started seeing large blacks ants in our kitchen. They would come out of nowhere and congregate around food crumbs. These ants were very dark and big. We called these people for pest control of ants. The exterminator came on time and explained the procedure. The ant problem died away within a few weeks. I’m glad we chose them for ant extermination services.”

Caroline, via HomeStars

“I had researched many companies for bed bug extermination. I compared the service offerings and decided to go with since they provided longest guarantee period. The entire experience was hassle free and without hiccups from booking to the extermination service. Afterwards I was given a FAQ sheet to answer typical questions and what to expect. We are very happy with our experience and would gladly recommend Quest to anybody.”

Herman, via Google

“A tenant brought in some nasty bedbugs from a hostel she had stayed at in New York. Quest came in, did their thing – and the problem was rectified before it became a huge problem. This was a few years ago – and there hasn’t been a single problem/recurrence since. Great company – reasonable rates, effective service!! Well worth it!”
